Women and youth constitute the large share of people who live in Goromonzi and Bindura districts where WCDT operates and are in dire need of economic empowerment. The high unemployment rate, the districts coupled with the little control and ownership over economic resources and the cultural norms that disrespect women has resulted in disproportionate sufferings among women and youth groups. In addressing the above AMSCOT partnered with WCDT to deliver an economic empowerment project in Piggery farming. The project seeks to break the cycle of poverty in women and youth, by enhancing their capacity through economic empowerment. The project is strategically linked with the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-economic Transformation (ZimAsset)-a government initiative designed to achieve sustainable development and social equity anchored on indigenization, empowerment and employment creation among both women and youth.
For sustainability, WCDT manages the project and report all operational and service matters to AMSCOT throughout the project lifetime. The proceeds derived from selling pork revolve within the group to buy feeds and purchase more pigs for the piggery project to expand. Profits made are also being shared among group members which has improve their standard of living. The project which cost about $1,000.00 was commissioned in September 2018, with 120 sows, benefiting 400 people per annum.
