Borehole drilling – Wadzanai Community Development Trust

To mitigate the challenge of lack of clean water in part of Goromonzi district of Mashonaland East Province of Zimbabwe, AMSCOT embarked on drilling of a borehole to help support the activities of Wadzanai Community Development Trust, a community-based organisation targeting women, men and youths in Chinamhora area northwest of Goromonzi district in Mashonaland East Province. The Trust operates in 8 wards of Chinamhora covering a geographic area of around 1 500 square kilometres with inhabitants that are around 193 000 people and are generally resource poor. Access to control and ownership of economic resources by women and youth is limited, most of the boreholes and other water sources are either not functioning or needing repairs. Women and children have to walk for long distances looking for water. Some have to fetch water for domestic use where cattle, goats and donkeys drink from. This presents serious health challenges for the families and the community at large. As a result, most women and children from the surrounding communities have had to travel long distances to get clean water. After the successful drilling of the borehole in 2017, approximately, 5 000 people now have access to clean water.
